Francis Bacon (1561–1626) war ein englischer Philosoph, Jurist und Staatsmann in London, der unter König Jakob I. das Amt des Lordkanzlers bekleidete. Er gilt als Wegbereiter des modernen Empirismus und der wissenschaftlichen Methodik, verlor jedoch 1621 nach einer Verurteilung wegen Bestechlichkeit durch das Parlament seine Ämter. Für Bibelleser ist er durch seine Auffassung relevant, dass sich Gott sowohl in der Heiligen Schrift als auch in der Schöpfung offenbart und eine tiefere Naturbetrachtung zum Glauben führt.
