Er gilt mit seinen „Vier Büchern vom wahren Christentum“ als einflussreicher Wegbereiter des Pietismus, der eine praktische Verwirklichung des Glaubens betonte und spätmittelalterliche Mystik integrierte, was ihm zeitgenössische Kritik der lutherischen Orthodoxie eintrug.
