Der englische Theologe und Bibelübersetzer John Nelson Darby (1800–1882) verließ das Pfarramt der Church of Ireland und wurde zu einer prägenden Gründungsfigur der Brüderbewegung in Europa und Nordamerika. Er entwickelte das System des Dispensationalismus samt der Lehre von der vorentrückenden Wiederkunft Christi, vertrat jedoch auch einen strikten Ekklesiologie- und Absonderungsanspruch, der zur Spaltung in offene und geschlossene Brüdergemeinden führte. Für Bibelleser heute ist sein Werk durch einflussreiche texttreue Bibelübersetzungen und eine Endzeittheologie präsent, die weite Teile des weltweiten Evangelikalismus geprägt hat.
