Athanasius der Große (296–373) war ein frühchristlicher Theologe und langjähriger Bischof von Alexandria im römischen Ägypten. Er verteidigte im arianischen Streit unnachgiebig die Wesensgleichheit von Vater und Sohn nach dem Konzil von Nicäa, legte 367 erstmals den neutestamentlichen 27-Bücher-Kanon fest und wurde wegen kirchenpolitischer Machtkämpfe fünfmal ins Exil verbannt.
