John Wycliffe

John Wycliffe war ein englischer Theologe, Philosoph und Priester des 14. Jahrhunderts, der an der Universität Oxford und in Lutterworth wirkte. Er initiierte die erste Übersetzung der Bibel ins Englische, betonte die alleinige Autorität der Heiligen Schrift gegenüber kirchlichen Dogmen und wurde 1415 auf dem Konzil von Konstanz postum als Häretiker verurteilt. Für Bibelleser heute steht er für die Entstehung volkssprachlicher Bibelübersetzungen und das Ringen um den direkten Zugang zum biblischen Text.
