John Knox

John Knox (1514–1572) war ein schottischer Geistlicher und der führende Reformator Schottlands im 16. Jahrhundert. Er begründete den schottischen Presbyterianismus und stand für eine kompromisslose Bindung an die Bibel, geriet jedoch auch durch seine scharfe Polemik – etwa gegen die politische Herrschaft von Frauen – in anhaltende Konflikte. Für Bibelleser heute verkörpert er standhaften Bekennermut gegenüber weltlichen Herrschern, wirft durch seine theologische Härte jedoch zugleich Fragen zum Umgang mit Macht und religiösem Eifer auf.
