Der in der Schweiz geborene Paracelsus (Theophrastus von Hohenheim) war ein Arzt, Naturphilosoph und Laientheologe der Renaissance, der auf Wanderungen durch Europa sowie unter anderem in Basel und Salzburg wirkte. Er gilt als Begründer der modernen Toxikologie durch seinen Grundsatz zur Dosiswirkung, stieß jedoch durch seine scharfe Polemik gegen die etablierte Medizin sowie die Verflechtung seiner Lehre mit Alchemie und Astrologie auf heftigen Widerspruch.
