Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) war ein italienischer Mathematiker, Physiker und Astronom, der in Pisa, Padua und Florenz wirkte. Er begründete wesentliche Methoden der modernen empirischen Naturwissenschaft und geriet durch seine Verteidigung des heliozentrischen Weltbilds in Konflikt mit der römischen Inquisition, die ihn 1633 wegen des Verdachts der Häresie verurteilte.
