William Carey

William Carey (1761–1834) war ein englischer baptistischer Missionar, Pastor und Sprachgelehrter, der ab 1793 vor allem im indischen Serampore und Kalkutta wirkte. Er gilt als Wegbereiter der modernen protestantischen Mission und wurde durch umfangreiche Bibelübersetzungen in indische Sprachen sowie sein Engagement gegen die Witwenverbrennung bekannt. Heutigen Bibellesern begegnet er als Beispiel für beharrliche Hingabe an die weltweite Schriftverbreitung, dessen Dienst in der Geschichtswissenschaft zugleich im Spannungsfeld kolonialer Strukturen betrachtet wird.
