Praying means nothing other than opening oneself up to Jesus, so that he can enter into us with his almighty power. The success of prayer must not depend on the certainty or boldness of the one praying, or anything like that, but always on one thing alone: opening oneself up. And that is not a matter of strength, but of will: do I want to let Jesus into my need? This question in turn depends on my helplessness. That is why prayer is a mysterious tool that, at its deepest core, can only be used successfully by the helpless.

Ole Hallesby (1879–1961) war ein einflussreicher norwegischer Theologieprofessor, Erweckungsprediger und Leiter der lutherischen Inneren Mission, der im Zweiten Weltkrieg auch im kirchlichen Widerstand gegen die deutsche Besatzung aktiv war. Er stand für einen kompromisslosen pietistisch-orthodoxen Glauben, führte harte Auseinandersetzungen gegen theologische Liberalisierung und löste 1953 mit einer drastischen Rundfunkpredigt über die Hölle eine landesweite Kontroverse aus. Für Bibelleser heute ist er vor allem durch seine seelsorgerlichen Schriften wie das Buch „Vom Beten“ von Bedeutung, in dem er das Gebet als Zuflucht der menschlichen Hilflosigkeit vor Gott beschreibt.
