Johann Albrecht Bengel (1687–1752) war ein deutscher lutherischer Theologe und Kirchenleiter, der als prägende Gestalt des württembergischen Pietismus wirkte. Er begründete methodische Regeln der neutestamentlichen Textkritik, verfasste den einflussreichen Bibelkommentar „Gnomon Novi Testamenti“ und löste mit spekulativen Berechnungen zur biblischen Endzeit zeitgenössischen Widerspruch aus. Für heutige Bibelleser steht er für eine Schriftauslegung, die akribische philologische Textarbeit mit dem heilsgeschichtlichen Bezug auf die persönliche Glaubenspraxis verbindet.
