Meister Eckhart (um 1260–1328) war ein deutscher Dominikaner, Theologe und Philosoph, der an der Universität Paris sowie in Erfurt, Straßburg und Köln wirkte. Als führender Vertreter der rheinischen Mystik lehrte er das Loslassen aller Eigeninteressen („Gelassenheit“) und das göttliche Wirken im Seelengrund, was zu einem Inquisitionsverfahren und der postumen Verurteilung einzelner Sätze durch Papst Johannes XXII. führte.
