Philipp Melanchthon (1497–1560) war ein deutscher Philologe, evangelischer Theologe und Bildungsreformer, der als enger Weggefährte Martin Luthers in Wittenberg wirkte. Er verfasste mit den „Loci Communes“ sowie der „Confessio Augustana“ zentrale Bekenntnisschriften der Reformation, geriet jedoch durch theologische Kompromissversuche in Streitigkeiten und befürwortete obrigkeitliche Maßnahmen gegen Täufer sowie die Hinrichtung Michael Servets. Bibellesern begegnet er als philologischer Mitarbeiter an Luthers Bibelübersetzung und als Gestalter einer Schriftauslegung, die humanistische Bildung mit reformatorischer Theologie verband.
