Richard Wurmbrand war ein rumänischer lutherischer Pastor jüdischer Herkunft, der wegen der Leitung einer christlichen Untergrundkirche 14 Jahre in kommunistischer Haft verbrachte und nach seiner Ausreise das Hilfswerk für verfolgte Christen (Hilfsaktion Märtyrerkirche / Voice of the Martyrs) gründete. Bekannt wurde er weltweit durch Berichte über seine Foltererfahrungen und das Buch „Gefoltert für Christus“, während seine scharfe antikommunistische Rhetorik sowie spekulative Thesen über Karl Marx auch auf fachliche Kritik stießen.
