Leo the Great

Leo der Große (400–461) war von 440 bis zu seinem Tod Bischof von Rom und prägte als Theologe und Kirchenpolitiker die Spätantike. Bekannt ist er für seine Formulierung der Zweinaturenlehre Christi für das Konzil von Chalcedon sowie für die Durchsetzung des päpstlichen Primats und den Rückgriff auf kaiserliche Gewalt gegen religiöse Abweichler. Bibellesern begegnet er heute vor allem durch seine Predigten über das Kirchenjahr und die Menschwerdung Christi, deren christologische Grundlagen bis heute ökumenisch geteilt werden.
