August Hermann Francke war ein deutscher evangelisch-lutherischer Theologe und Pädagoge, der an der Wende vom 17. zum 18. Jahrhundert vor allem in Halle an der Saale wirkte. Als zentrale Leitfigur des Halleschen Pietismus verband er persönliche Bekehrung mit organisierter Diakonie und Bildungsreformen, wobei sein strenges Erziehungskonzept und seine Abgrenzung zur lutherischen Orthodoxie auch auf Widerstand stießen.
