Erasmus of Rotterdam

Erasmus von Rotterdam (1466–1536) war ein niederländischer Theologe, Priester und Gelehrter, der als führender Vertreter des christlichen Humanismus an verschiedenen Orten Europas, insbesondere in Basel, wirkte. Er trat für die Rückbesinnung auf die biblischen Urtexte ein, gab 1516 das griechische Neue Testament heraus und geriet durch seine Vermittlerrolle zwischen katholischer Kirche und Reformation mit beiden Seiten in Konflikt, unter anderem mit Martin Luther über die Willensfreiheit. Für Bibelleser steht er heute für die wissenschaftliche Erschließung der Ursprachen und das Eintreten für gelebte christliche Ethik gegenüber konfessionellem Dogmatismus.
