Erasmus von Rotterdam (1466–1536) war ein niederländischer Theologe, Priester und Gelehrter, der als führender Vertreter des christlichen Humanismus an verschiedenen Orten Europas, insbesondere in Basel, wirkte. Er trat für die Rückbesinnung auf die biblischen Urtexte ein, gab 1516 das griechische Neue Testament heraus und geriet durch seine Vermittlerrolle zwischen katholischer Kirche und Reformation mit beiden Seiten in Konflikt, unter anderem mit Martin Luther über die Willensfreiheit.
