Johann Gottfried Herder war ein deutscher lutherischer Theologe, Dichter und Philosoph des 18. Jahrhunderts, der unter anderem als Generalsuperintendent in Weimar wirkte. Als Vordenker von Sturm und Drang sowie der Weimarer Klassik prägte er ein neues Verständnis von Sprache, Kulturgeschichte und Poesie und stieß mit seiner Abkehr von starrer Orthodoxie auf zeitgenössischen Widerspruch.
