Die schwedische Adelige und Mystikerin Birgitta von Schweden (1303–1373) gründete nach dem Tod ihres Mannes den Erlöserorden und wirkte ab Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts vor allem in Rom. Bekannt ist sie für ihre umfangreichen visionären Schriften, ihre bildhafte Passions- und Marienfrömmigkeit sowie für ihre scharfen Reformmahnungen an weltliche Herrscher und Päpste. Für heutige Bibelleser steht ihr Wirken beispielhaft für eine spätmittelalterliche Frömmigkeit, die persönliche Christusmeditation mit unerschrockener Kritik an kirchlichen Missständen verband.
