Athanasius von Alexandria (296–373) war ein frühchristlicher Theologe und Bischof von Alexandria im spätantiken römischen Ägypten. Er prägte die Verteidigung der nizänischen Trinitätslehre gegen den Arianismus maßgeblich, setzte seine Positionen kirchenpolitisch kompromisslos durch und verbrachte aufgrund von Konflikten mit wechselnden Kaisern viele Jahre im Exil. Für Bibelleser ist er insbesondere als Verfasser des Osterfestbriefs von 367 bedeutsam, der erstmals den neutestamentlichen Kanon aller 27 Schriften in seiner heutigen Gestalt auflistete.
