Athanasius von Alexandria (296–373) war ein frühchristlicher Theologe und Bischof von Alexandria im spätantiken römischen Ägypten. Er prägte die Verteidigung der nizänischen Trinitätslehre gegen den Arianismus maßgeblich, setzte seine Positionen kirchenpolitisch kompromisslos durch und verbrachte aufgrund von Konflikten mit wechselnden Kaisern viele Jahre im Exil.
