By gracious powers so wonderfully sheltered, and confidently waiting, come what may, we know that God is with us night and morning, and will be with us each intent new day. Still the past year torments our hearts, still the heavy burden of evil days presses upon us; ah Lord, grant our frightened souls the salvation for which you created us. And should you offer us the heavy cup, the bitter one of suffering, filled to its highest brim, then we will receive it thankfully without trembling from your good and beloved hand. But if you wish to grant us joy once more in this world and the radiance of its sun, then we will remember the past, and then our life belongs entirely to you.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer
