William Tyndale (1494–1536) war ein englischer Theologe, Priester und Bibelübersetzer der Reformationszeit, der überwiegend im europäischen Exil in Deutschland und den Niederlanden wirkte. Er schuf die erste gedruckte englische Bibelübersetzung direkt aus den hebräischen und griechischen Grundtexten, weshalb er von der Kirchenhierarchie und der englischen Krone verfolgt und 1536 als Ketzer hingerichtet wurde. Für heutige Bibelleser steht sein Werk für den historischen Kampf um die freie Zugänglichkeit der Heiligen Schrift in der Volkssprache und die sprachliche Prägung moderner Übersetzungen.
